This AU is eating away at me somebody sent help. They/them Tsubasa for more ambiguity and implications but also because I think it fits them in this a lot, considering the whole theme

Both are around 12-13 here. Ryuuga is still the heir to the crown of dragon emperor, being the one with the purest blood and strongest aura, but in his eyes his clan are getting meeker, more cowardly, and actually has the audacity to put him up in an arrange marriage with someone from another branch in the clan for safety, so he ran away. He also doesn’t have a bey yet, so he got by through sheer strength of self. Tsubasa is a nomad who’s taken from tribe to tribe for sheep/goat herding job during contracts (they’re a slave of short, sell between owners to look after livestock and make use out of their skill in beyblading, which is defensive - a style that most people aren’t really good at)

They meet in one winter morning, when Tsubasa found Ryuuga chewing on a goat, its thirst torn open, and several empty vases of milk. The only reason the current tribe Tsubasa was tagging along with didn’t skin Ryuuga alive for the crime of thievery was that he readily gave over the golden bracelet (which to Ryuuga is actually like some cheap accessories anyway he has plenty at home, but if those ppl think they’re valuable then they can have it). The tribe wants to take advantage of how Ryuuga doesn’t talk in their language, and how the boy looks very strong, and planned to make him into a slave too but his ass got bailed out by Tsubasa (because they just doesn’t like the idea of anyone have the same love as him), so now Ryuuga has to work as goat/sheep herd just like Tsubasa till the summer to lay off his remaining debt, so now they’re stuck together

In the current world, money buy power, and strength can buy money, which Ryuuga has plenty of. Tsubasa once joked about how Ryuuga totally should apply for a gladiator match in the big town to win some money, he can even borrow Aquila if he wants to, if Ryuuga’s has way too much pent up anger and power anyway. Ryuuga did it. The smol bird knew from now on that they shouldn’t challenge Ryuuga at anything anime or because the kid with pointy ears would just accept and did it successfully anyway

In this world, Highlanders are known and famous around the world, but they’re more like an urban legend simply for how reclusive they are, but the people know that Dragon clan are real, Dragon clan people calm the volcano, sloth the earth quake and direct the sea, they’re not to be trifled with, and the Highlanders only show themselves to the strong or those that them deemed worthy anyway, so the common man has no idea what a person from the dragon clan would look like except from baseless rumors. That included Tsubasa. They thought that all Highlanders would have a overwhelming dragon bey, but Ryuuga doesn’t have one, and his pride isn’t that high that he settles with using his old and battered Aquila, so Tsubasa never doubts his identity one bit

Haven’t thought that far ahead in the story, except that Ryuuga soon paid his remaining debt back, and buy Tsubasa from his current owner so they could roam the world together (“You’re my guide” is the lie that Ryuuga constantly told to Tsubasa lol). But I think eventually the royal clan sooner or later would sniff out Ryuuga’s location and try to bring him back to the clan anyway. Maybe I should split it into different endings

after many considerations, I decided the best way I can get no brainer no angst all fluff whimsical RyuTsu is putting them into a school/university AU. I wanna pitch a head disciplinary student Tsubasa to monitor and investigate this delinquent Ryuuga who turned out actually not a delinquent at all and actually very chill. I wanna all the teenfic cringiness

you know what, I actually will talk about this because it's bothering me. The issue with focussing so heavily on syd and carmy's potential for a romantic relationship isn't that there's something inherently unintellectual about romance or whatever, it's that a lot of people seem incapable of doing that without immediately flattening the story and ignoring or intentionally misreading any and all nuance for the sake of that romance. Every scene suddenly becomes about how it impacts their relationship, every analysis is done through a romantic lens, every frame or line of dialogue becomes about finding some easter egg or hint that "proves" these people should start dating. Their dynamic is absolutely a fundamental part of this show, but if you can only see it as a will-they-won't-they, you miss so much of what the story is actually trying to say with these two.

There are good versions of this story where their relationship is romantic and there are good versions of this story where it isn't, but as soon as you decide them being together is "the point," you lose the ability to actually judge the story for what it is, not what you want it to be.

thinking about how smile (2022) is every traumatised person's worst nightmare. how the message clearly says "your trauma will always win and no matter what you do, you'll swallow it and it'll inhabit your skin forever." how, even if the protagonist had defeated the monster, she would have still lost - the intergenerational trauma has already spread its insidious wings and would survive in the mind of her sister's child. how traumatised people are so often told to just 'suck it up and smile through the pain,' how laughter is the best medicine until it isn't. how misery loves company. and how sometimes healing comes too late too little - you've let the beast grow too strong, it became an intrinsic part of you, your identity.

I think what people are missing when they say "The girls took all the powerful moments from the guys!!" or "Egwene would never have been able to stand up to Ishy for even a moment!" is that...the women are never standing alone when they do their incredible acts.

I think even book readers forget the massive buff being near other ta'veren gives the characters in the books and the power of working in a team.

In the season 1 finale, unlike Rand in the books, Egwene doesn't demolish a whole army of trollocs alone, nor does Nynaeve, nor do any of the other women there. Egwene and Nynaeve don't even cast any of the attack weaves at all. They are linked and Amalisa - a Tower trained individual - uses the collective power of all the women standing there to demolish the battlefield.

in the season 2 finale, they set it up all the way back in episode 1: "Standing alone, a shield only covers part of you, the rest is exposed. But standing together, our shields cover each other and nothing can touch us."

When Egwene stands up to Ishamael, she's not attacking him. She's making a shield. And she's not doing it alone. Mat and Rand are there too, two more powerful ta'veren converging in the Pattern with her, with two more on the way.

It's amazing how quickly book readers forget the plot convenience power of ta'veren Robert Jordan very purposely wrote into the story!

In the final confrontations of both seasons, Rand IS the one who strikes the final blow - he's the one who has to mentally 'defeat' Ishamael. It's Rand's decisions that determine the outcome in both - not Egwene's opinions on the matter, not Nynaeve's. The idea that a random mass attack is a more impactful character moment than overcoming the temptation of Ishy's promise of a perfect world for Rand to live in, that Rand declaring firmly and to Ishy's face that he will never join the shadow never stop fighting for the Light, is just ridiculous.

None of Rand's actually impactful, story-defining moments are given to 'the girls'. The show is not 'pushing Rand down so the women can be made more powerful'. If that's what you think, I'd take a look at what you think is 'powerful' and then take a look at the actual story Robert Jordan wrote and what he had to say about what wins the battle in the end. Was it sheer, raw power that won the conflict or was it strength of self (internally knowing who you are and not caving on your morals for power or influence or glory), community, and compassion?

Yeah, Rand is the character with the most raw power - but that's not why he wins battles and I think his big power moments will mean so much more in the show now that we've seen WHO HE IS and WHY he's using that power.

This isn't to say the explosions of power that Nynaeve and Egwene get aren't meaningful - I think the way the show has altered them to be about community support makes that act so much more powerful than a single character floating above the battlefield and demolishing it all on their own.

So in conclusion, I don't think the criticisms that "Rafe hates men and is giving all Rand's important stuff to the women!!" are accurate in the slightest.

Ya know. I spent most of my life with horrible painful soul-crushing social anxiety.

And after about 25 years of continuous hard work, suddenly, people started pointing out - to my utter bafflement - that I had, in fact, achieved my lifelong dream of being charismatic. I'm 29 now; I feel comfortable in most social situations, and it is a very rare person whom I cannot make laugh.

I am, undoubtedly, finally, charismatic.

But do you know what I found?

I found that now that I have an understanding of which social rules serve which functions -- Now that I have an understanding of just how much damage my awkwardness was doing to people, well,

I found that, actually, my awkwardness never really hurt anyone at all. People were just judgmental dicks to me about it.

Now that I have the skill-level to (most of the time) creatively vocalize what is in my head as soon as I think it and without fear, I can confirm once and for all what I had always suspected:

I was worth talking to when I was quiet.

I was worth talking to when I was awkward, and when the words in my head took time and patience to hear, and when most of my jokes didn't land. I was worth talking to the whole time.

So I just... I hope that if you've ever wondered whether you are worth communicating with, the answer is yes. Absolutely yes. Each of us has a soul worth sharing - and if you and I were talking, I would happily wait for you to speak (or communicate in other ways) without condescending, and I would never shame you for that harmless awkwardness that so many people feel the need to violently stomp out.

You are worth talking to. You just are. And you deserve people who will speak to you with kindness, with patience, and with the basic immutable respect owed to all people.

(I talk about this with some frequency, both on tumblr and in real life. At some point, maybe I'll gather all my thoughts on the matter into one post. At some point, I wrote about my personal experience trying to build my social skill. But I felt the need to say at least a little bit tonight after seeing this other lovely post, and I'm glad I did. It will happen again.)
